Sepilok and the Kinabatangan River

Updated Sept 2026  details verified

The centre shows you what's being saved. The river shows you what it's being saved for. Two hours apart, one itinerary — this is Sabah's classic circuit, and here's what it actually feels like.

06:05, on the water

The boat slips out before the sun is properly up. Mist on the river. The engine at a murmur.

Hornbills cross in pairs, high and unhurried. Your guide cuts the motor under a fig tree and points, and forty metres up there's a shape feeding — a wild orangutan, no platform, no schedule, just breakfast.

Some mornings, grey backs at the water's edge: pygmy elephants. No month can promise them. That's rather the point.

Why these two belong together

Sepilok gives you orangutans up close, with the story that makes them mean something. The Kinabatangan gives you wildlife with no story arranged at all — proboscis monkeys crashing into their sleeping trees at dusk, crocodile eyes in a spotlight, trees that flash with fireflies.

The logistics are frictionless. Land at Sandakan. Sepilok on day one. The river for two nights. Out again — with the Gomantong Caves sitting on the connecting drive as a free stop.

Every operator in Sabah packages this circuit, because it is simply the right shape.

The rhythm of a lodge day

Dawn cruise, then breakfast. The hot hours are for hammocks or a guided forest walk. The late-afternoon cruise is proboscis monkey hour. After dark: night cruises, night walks, and at Abai, the fireflies.

The guides are the difference between seeing the river and merely boating on it. Every package below includes them.
