Adopting a Sepilok orangutan

Updated Sept 2026  details verified

You can't take one home — you can fund one's journey back to the forest, by name, and follow it for years. Here's how the official scheme works, what it isn't, and why this is the only sponsorship on Earth where being abandoned is the happy ending.

How it works

The scheme runs through Orangutan Appeal UK, the registered charity that has funded care and rehabilitation at Sepilok since 2001 — the centre's official channel, not a third-party reseller. An adoption is symbolic sponsorship of a named orphan currently in the nurseries: an annual contribution toward the unglamorous actuals of rehabilitation — milk, medicine, keeper hours, enrichment — with updates on your orangutan's progress through forest school.

Adopt directly at appeal.org.uk, where the current orphan profiles, prices and pack details live — they change as students arrive and graduate, which is the system working, so we link rather than copy them here.

What your money actually buys

Not a photogenic moment — a curriculum. The buddy system pairings, the climbing-frame hours, the veterinary care behind the scenes, the deliberately boring platform meals waiting at the far end: adoption money runs the machine at its least visible and most important. If the ways to help were ranked by plot, this one wins — yours is the only donation that sends progress reports.

What it isn't — and why that's the point

No ownership. No behind-the-scenes visits. No contact, ever — the same three reasons that govern everyone govern sponsors, and a scheme offering more access would be a red flag, not a perk. Your orangutan does not know you exist, which is precisely the curriculum: humans irrelevant, forest everything.

And the ending is built in. Somewhere ahead of every adoption is the update that says your orphan has stopped coming to the platform — moved deeper, gone wild, graduated in absentia. You will have paid, for years, to be forgotten by a great ape. It is the best outcome money can buy in conservation, and the scheme's quiet genius is making you want exactly that.

The gift version

Adoptions are the honest wildlife gift: a story that develops for years instead of an object, suitable for the child who loves animals, the person who has everything, or the traveller you just took through this site. Time-to-arrange is minutes; the plot lasts a childhood.

Adoption questions

How much does it cost to adopt a Sepilok orangutan?

Current prices and pack options live at appeal.org.uk — they change with the programme, so check there rather than trusting any figure a guide site froze last year. Ours included.

Can you visit your adopted orangutan?

You can visit Sepilok like anyone and may well see nursery residents — but there's no special access, no meeting, no contact. The distance is what you're funding.

What happens when my adopted orangutan is released?

You get the best possible news, and typically the option to follow a new orphan. Graduation is the product; the scheme is designed around you celebrating it.

Is the adoption tax-deductible?

Orangutan Appeal UK is a UK-registered charity; tax treatment depends on your country — their site covers the details alongside the adoption packs.
