KK and the orangutans sit on opposite coasts of Sabah — a 45-minute flight, or a six-hour road over the shoulder of Mount Kinabalu. Here's every version, which flight to book for which plan, and the honest answer on squeezing it into one day.
Kota Kinabalu faces the South China Sea. Sepilok sits near Sandakan, on the Sulu Sea side. Between them: the Crocker Range and the massif of Mount Kinabalu. There is no fast road, and there never will be — which is why this page is mostly about aeroplanes.

Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia both run KK–Sandakan several times daily, wheels-up to wheels-down in about 45 minutes. Fares are kindest booked a few weeks out; carry-on-only keeps the whole operation nimble.
On landing, you're 11 km from the gate: ~RM45 and 20 minutes by the taxi counter or Grab, and every Sepilok resort will collect you for similar money if you ask when booking. Airport logistics.
Which flight to book, by plan:
Long-distance buses leave KK's Inanam terminal and take six to seven hours for about RM45, climbing over the range on the Ranau road. The scenery is the compensation: the route passes the Kinabalu Park turn-off, and on a clear morning the mountain fills the left-hand windows.
Two ways to use it well. As a one-way leg of an overland Sabah tour — ideally broken with a night at Kinabalu Park, which turns a slog into two good travel days. Or not at all. As a same-day return it is thirteen hours of bus for two hours of orangutan, and nobody has ever recommended it twice.
Ask for the Sepilok junction drop — Mile 14, 2.5 km from the gates — and have your resort or a Grab collect you from the junction rather than walking it with bags.
The same Ranau road, roughly six hours of genuine driving, and a decent one-way road trip if Sabah overland is the point — Kinabalu Park and Ranau's attractions break it naturally. Check your rental's one-way drop-off terms in Sandakan before committing; the fee changes the maths. At the Sepilok end, parking is easy everywhere.
Can you fly KK–Sepilok–KK in one day? Technically, yes. First flight out, last flight back, and the timings just about close.
Should you? Here's what the day actually buys: one feeding at a sprint, a fast nursery visit, and more hours in airports and taxis than in the forest — with zero slack for a delayed flight, and the night walk structurally impossible. You'd be spending flight money to shortchange the very thing you flew for.
The 2D1N shape fixes everything for the price of one night's room:
One more trick for trip-builders: fly open-jaw. Into Sandakan, out of Sandakan after the river, or KK-in / Sandakan-out around a bigger Sabah loop — the fares price much like returns, and you never re-cross the mountains for nothing.
About 45 minutes in the air; call it two hours door to gate including the airport dance.
Roughly 320 km over the Ranau road — six hours' driving, six to seven by bus.
No — Sabah's only railway runs south from KK, the opposite direction. Fly or road.
Technically. We'd talk you out of it — the 2D1N shape above costs one night's room and returns double the wildlife.
Both fly it several times daily; book by schedule and fare, not brand. The early departure is the prize either way.
