Opening hours, and how to use them

Updated Sept 2026  details verified

Open every day of the year, in two sessions around a midday break. The hours themselves take ten seconds to read. Using them well is the rest of this page.

Visiting hours — verified September 2026

  • Sat–Thu — 09:00–12:00 and 14:00–16:00
  • Friday — 09:00–11:00 and 14:00–16:00. The midday prayer break starts earlier.
  • Open daily. Public holidays included. No closure days in the year.
  • Feedings at 10:00 and 15:00. The centre clears visitors out promptly at 16:00.
  • One ticket is valid across both sessions of the same day.

Why the midday break exists — and why it's a gift

The centre closes 12:00–14:00 every day. Fight it and it's an annoyance. Plan with it and it's the best-designed lunch break in Borneo.

The reserve road provides: resort restaurants that serve non-guests, the simple cafeteria at the entrance, and — directly opposite the gate — the Sun Bear Centre, which doesn't close at midday and takes cards. The classic full-day rhythm slots together like it was scheduled by committee: morning feeding, nursery, sun bears, lunch, canopy walk, afternoon feeding. The hour-by-hour version.

The Friday exception, in detail

Friday mornings end at 11:00, not noon, for the midday prayers — this is the single most-missed fact about visiting Sepilok, and half the sources online still get it wrong.

What it changes: the 10:00 feeding still runs, but your morning has one fewer hour in it. Arrive by 09:00 sharp, take the feeding, then choose — a fast nursery visit before the 11:00 gate, or save the nursery for the 14:00 reopening and give the middle hours to the sun bears and lunch. The afternoon runs normally: 14:00–16:00, feeding at 15:00.

Timing your arrival — the three scenarios

Public holidays and busy days

The centre opens every public holiday — Hari Raya, Chinese New Year, Christmas, all of them. What changes is who's beside you at the rail: Malaysian school holidays and long weekends bring strong domestic crowds, concentrated on the 10:00 session. The escape valves, in order: the 15:00 feeding, the nursery's off-peak hours, and the shoulder months generally.

The 16:00 problem

Closing time has a sting. The centre clears out at 16:00 sharp. The last bus to Sandakan leaves at 16:00. And Grab drivers often decline gate pick-ups, which the waiting taxis price accordingly.

Pre-book your return before you come out, ask a resort to call one, or — the answer this site keeps arriving at — sleep in the reserve, trade the last bus for the 6pm night walk, and take tomorrow's quiet morning session as the bonus. The full workaround.

Hours questions

Is the centre open on Fridays?

Yes — but the morning ends at 11:00 instead of 12:00. Both feedings run as normal.

Is it open on public holidays?

Every one of them. Expect bigger domestic crowds on Malaysian school holidays and long weekends.

Can I stay through the midday break?

No — the centre empties at noon and reopens at 14:00. Your ticket covers re-entry, and the reserve road handles lunch.

What's the latest worth arriving?

15:00, and only for the afternoon feeding. For a real visit, be inside by 14:15 — or come back tomorrow morning.
