Two to three days: the version people wish they'd planned

Updated Sept 2026  details verified

A night in the reserve unlocks the night walk and a crowd-free morning. A second or third day adds the river. This is the shape that fits Sepilok best — most visitors find out too late.

Day one — the full circuit, unhurried

Run the full-day plan knowing you don't have to finish it. Both feedings. The sun bears. The canopy walk.

Check into a reserve-road resort. Then, at six, the night walk — flying squirrels at dusk, loris eyes in the torchbeam. The day visitors are already back in Sandakan. This part belongs to you.

Day two — the quiet morning, then the river

Walk to the gate for opening. The platform at 09:30, on foot from your resort, is a different place from the platform at 09:55 off a coach.

Late morning, transfer two hours east to the Kinabatangan. By late afternoon you're on the water, and whole harems of proboscis monkeys are crashing into their sleeping trees above you.

Day three — dawn on the water

The 06:00 cruise is Sabah's best hour. Mist. Hornbills. The real chance of a wild orangutan at breakfast in a fig.

Then your own breakfast, and the transfer back to Sandakan for an afternoon flight — or another river day, if you built one in. Nobody regrets the extra day.

The river leg — lodges, boats, permits — is the one part worth handing to an operator. The Sepilok & Kinabatangan combinations start at RM1,350 (about US$335) with everything included, and the enquiry form turns your dates into a day-by-day plan within one working day.
