The best time to visit

Updated Sept 2026  details verified

Two decisions: which session, which months. And one paradox nobody selling dry-season packages will volunteer — the rainy months are often better for actually seeing orangutans.

Time of day, settled fast

The 10:00 feeding draws more orangutans. Also more people. The 15:00 is quieter on both counts. One ticket covers both — so if you're staying in Sepilok, do both. The full session comparison: feeding times.

The seasons — and the paradox

Sabah's east coast runs broadly drier March–October, wetter November–February. Ordinary tropical logic says come in the dry: better boardwalks, brighter light.

Sepilok complicates it.

The fruiting paradox. When the forest fruits heavily — broadly the drier months — well-fed orangutans skip the platform's deliberately boring menu. When wild fruit is scarce — the wet season — more of them turn up for the bananas. Postcard weather and platform attendance pull in opposite directions. No operator selling July packages will tell you this.

Read the odds column as tendency, not promise. Fruiting varies year to year, and no month guarantees anything. The nursery, usefully, ignores the calendar entirely.

The practical answer

Building a Sabah trip? Come when the trip works, plan both feedings plus the nursery, and let the season be what it is.

Choosing freely? June or September for the best weather-to-crowd ratio. Or November–February if platform odds and prices outrank dry boardwalks — the contrarian pick this page exists to make respectable.

Timing questions

What's the single best month?

For the total experience: June or September. For platform sightings specifically: November–February has the structural edge. July–August is peak for crowds, not for orangutans.

Does rain cancel feedings?

Never. Every day, all year, all weather. Bring a poncho in any month.

Is Chinese New Year / Hari Raya a bad time?

The centre opens as normal, but domestic crowds peak. Favour the 15:00 session and book reserve-road rooms early.
